[128c]This appendix provides advice on making 35 millimeter slides and overhead foils, and on using service bureaus to produce output.
[207c]The most important thing to consider when you you're producing 35mm slides or overhead transparencies is the setting correct aspect ratio. The aspect ratio of a page is the ratio of its width to its height.
[268c]Different output technologies have different aspect ratios. For instance, that of 35 mm slides is 3:2 (in other words, the height of a slide is two-thirds its width). If you attempt to use the wrong aspect ratio for your output technology, your pages may be cut short.
[79c]Here are some typical media sizes that you won't find in the Page Layout panel:
[23c] 35mm Slide 11" x 7.33"
[25c] 4 x 5 Sheet 4.75" x 3.5"
8 x 10 Sheet 9.5" x 7.5"
[29c] NeXT Monitor 15.55" x 11.55"
[70c]You may need to clear your margins, particularly for the NeXT Monitor.
[12c]Aspect Ratio
[259c]Depending on the type of mounts you use, the amount of usable space on a 35 mm slide can change quite a bit. Concurrence defaults to a reasonable average. However, you should check with your slide service bureau or manual to confirm the actual imageable area.
[19c] 35 mm Slide Mounts
[215c]You can feed standard laser printer overhead transparencies into a NeXT 400 dpi Laser Printer, and into nearly all other brands of laser printers. Be sure to use overheads designated as for use with laser printers.
[35c]Printing to Overhead Transparencies
[356c]Service bureaus can take your Concurrence or PostScript documents and make various forms of hardcopies, often in color. Only service bureaus with computers running NeXTstep will accept Concurrence documents, but nearly all will accept PostScript documents. To create a PostScript version of a Concurrence slide show, use the Save button in the Print panel.
[116c]If your service bureau is unfamiliar with Concurrence, it may be good to show them the Technical Tips section below.
[178c]A bureau well versed in the use of Concurrence and NeXTstep is Alban/Bruce Communications, Inc. of Baltimore, MD. You can call them at 410/828-1220, or send a fax to 410/828-6845
[143c]Another NeXTstep and Concurrence-savvy service bureau is VIP of Alexandria, VA. They can be reached at 703/548-2164, or by fax at 703/548-9851.
[118c]For a larger list of recommended service bureaus, see the Release Notes file in the Concurrence software distribution.
[15c]Service Bureaus
[145c]The rest of this appendix is devoted to more technical tips. It's intended for those familiar with PostScript, or for service bureau technicians.
[14c]Technical Tips
[218c]The files created with the Save button in the Print panel are conformant Adobe PostScript. They should be imageable on any standard RIP, provided it has adequate memory and a sufficiently recent version of PostScript.
[30c] Conformant PostScript Created
[304c]To create output for 35mm slides, you will need to scale the image appropriately. If you are not equipped to do so, and if you have access to the Concurrence document which generated the PostScript, you can set the output scale in the Scale field of the Page Layout panel and re-generate the PostScript.
[33c] Scale PostScript for 35mm Slides
[387c]RIPs that do not read PostScript "%%PaperSize" comments may improperly crop images that use paper sizes larger than the default of Letter. If this occurs, it may be necessary to edit the PostScript by hand, inserting the appropriate page size instruction immediately after the "%%PaperSize" comment. See the printer description file for your particular RIP for the specific instruction.
